I got my first Megadrive in 1995- My mum got it from a catalogue for an undoubtedly inflated price due to the popularity of them at the time.
The console came with MegaGames 2 – a cartridge which would eat up large portions of childhood years single handed.
Containing such iconic classics as Streets of Rage, The Revenge of Shinobi, Super Hang-On, Columns, World Cup Italia ’90 and of course GOLDEN AXE.
From the second the epic soundtrack kicks in; you know that you’re in for something special.
Golden Axe is a side scrolling hack and slash arcade game, set in the fantasy-medieval style world of Yuria which in under the rule of the evil Death Adder; the Giant Barbarian has captured the King and his daughter and holds them captive in their castle. He also finds the Golden Axe, the magical emblem of Yuria, and threatens to destroy both the axe and the royal family unless the people of Yuria accept him as their ruler
You can choose from 3 playable characters to bring Death Adder to justice.
Ax Battler – a Longsword wielding Barbarian, seeking to avenge the death of his mother.
Gilius Thunderhead – an axe wielding dwarf, looking for revenge for his fallen brother.
Tyris Flare – an Amazonian warrior whos parents were murdered by Death Adder in cold blood.
The game follows your chosen hero in their battle towards the castle to confront Death Adder, along the way you save the inhabitants of Turtle Village, ride a giant eagle across the sea and through the castle to the throne room for a showdown with Death Adder.
You are aided along the way by magic attacks and mountable beasts which offer increased attack power but limited ability to dodge enemy attacks.
The game spawned several sequels – none of which recreated the charm and originality of the original game, Golden Axe has its place in history as a fine side scrolling hack & slash game and its one I frequently replay.
